Global Research @ Penn
The University of Pennsylvania is renowned for its abundant offerings reflecting the global interests of its faculty. Many in political science, sociology, at the Wharton School, in anthropology and elsewhere, teach courses and engage in research that touch upon or overlap with communications and society. The Annenberg School is increasingly linked to these scholars and centers and sees strengthening these ties further a priority. Examples of collaboration between the Center and other divisions of the University include:
- Students at the Law School have spent six months in Budapest at the Annenberg-organized Semester in Comparative Media Policy. at Central European University. Law faculty are involved in various projects, including those in China, Jordan and India. Jacques DeLisle and Ed Baker have participated in CGCS conferences and workshops. We have also organized events between Jordanian visiting scholars and the international law students association.
- The Center is developing joint research and hosting efforts with the Center for Advanced Study of India (CASI). In January 2007, Sevanti Ninan visited, conducting research on Pakistan and India's media coverage of one another. In October 2007 Vikram Raghavan visited the University; he was hosted by CASI, CGCS, and the Law School. We are engaged in continuing discussions with Devesh Kapur of CASI to explore how we can extend our work in India. CASI has been a useful sounding board as we consider the various options - including an Annenberg-Oxford type institute or a shorter workshop on media law that would have as a focus bringing up to date Price and Verhulst's edited book on Broadcast Reform in India. They are also a valuable resource for reaching out to potential Annenberg graduate students from India.
- The Center has benefited from cooperation with the Middle East Center in shaping a study of Media Laws and Policies of the Arab Middle East. In April 2007 a workshop titled "Beyond Media Censorship: Speech and the State in the Middle East" was held in conjunction with the Middle East Center; and two Jordanian scholars visited the University in Spring 2007, paving the way for more visiting scholars from the Middle East. We instituted a joint-Middle East Center/CGCS visiting scholar program. In Spring 2008, we jointly hosted Ibrahim Al-Marashi who also taught a course to Penn undergraduates on "Imagery, Media and Middle East Politics." Ferruh Yilmaz will be the joint visiting scholar in Spring 2009. We are also co-sponsoring a conference on media in Iran in Spring 2009.
- The Center has co-hosted Chinese visiting scholars with the Center for East Asian Studies (CEAS). Yanmei Lu, graduate student from the Communications Universiy of China, came from Spring 2006 through Spring 2007. In 2007-08, Prof. Fei Jiang and Xin Xin both visited in 2007-2008. During her visit, Xin Xin gave a lecture on the Press and the Olympics to Penn undergraduates, an event organized by the CEAS. In addition to assisting with visiting scholars, CEAS was consulted when CGCS developed its Penn-in-Beijing undergraduate summer school.
- Under the College of Liberal and Professional Studies, we completed the second year of the four-week undergraduate Penn-in-Beijing program with the aid of graduate student Chris Finlay, and Annenberg graduates Lee Humphreys and Jeff Niederdeppe. Prof. Peter Decherney, from Penn Cinema Studies, served as the faculty Director.
- Simon Haselock gave a lecture at the Penn Program in Ethnic Conflict in Fall 2007.
