Jordan Media Strengthening Program
Jordan's media sector, one of the more open in the Middle East region, is at an important crossroads. Although the state still plays a dominant role in the sector, the government has been encouraging reform, and private newspapers and broadcasters are becoming bigger players. To support the development of a more vibrant, financially independent media sector, CGCS is supporting the government, local organizations and media outlets on legal and policy reforms.
Improving the legal and regulatory environment in which Jordanian media work is an important component of the five-year Jordan Media Strengthening Program (JMSP), which was launched in mid-2006. In addition to this component, on which CGCS partners with IREX, other JMSP objectives include enhancing professional standards through upgrading journalism university and mid-career training, fostering local media, supporting local media NGOs and providing support for media business development.
